About this course
This qualification reflects the role of individuals who have a range of well-developed hospitality service, sales or operational skills and sound knowledge of industry operations. Using discretion and judgement, they work with some independence and under supervision using plans, policies and procedures to guide work activities.
This qualification provides a pathway to work in organisations such as restaurants, hotels, motels, clubs, pubs, cafés, and coffee shops. This qualification allows for multiskilling and for specialisation in accommodation services, food and beverage and gaming.
Pathways from the qualification
After achieving this qualification candidates may choose to study, SIT40422 Certificate IV in Hospitality or SIT50422 Diploma of Hospitality Management or other SIT qualifications.

* Students are required to complete 36 service shifts (approx. 200 hours) of work placement. Students are responsible for organising their own work placements however YBI has been able to secure a range of suitable work place host sites for our students in several commercial hospitality establishments.

Work Placement & FAQs
Students are also required to complete 36 service shifts (approx. 200 hours) of work placement.
Students are responsible for organising their own work placements however YBI has been able to secure a range of suitable work place host sites for our students in several commercial hospitality establishments.
Q: What is work placement for?
A: Work placement provides practical training for students. You will work under the supervision of a supervisor in a real workplace. The work placement enables you to practice and develop your skills and is a compulsory requirement in order to gain your qualification.
Q: Is the work placement mandatory?
A: It is a mandatory requirement to complete work placement in order to receive your Hospitality qualification at YBI.
Q: Who is responsible to organise the work placement?
A: Students are responsible for finding their own work placements. However, YBI has agreements with different organisations in case students need any assistance finding placements
Q: Can I use my own employer for work placement?
A: Yes, if they meet the mandatory criteria for work placement assessment students can use their current job as a Work Placement. It does not affect at all the current student-employer relationship. The only change is that the student will be able to work more hours during this period.
Q: When can I start the work placement?
A: Students are eligible to participate in work placement upon completion of at least one term of theoretical study at the institute. Students are only deemed eligible by the Trainer to participate if they possess the required attributes and skills.
Q: How long is the work placement?
A: You have been allocated one term (3 months approximately) to complete you 36 shifts of Work Placement.
Q: If I am studying more than one course, do I need to participate in work placement again?
A: No, once only work placement per student.
Q: Can I change my work placement?
A: We don’t recommend. However under extenuating circumstances we may consider. Request will be assessed by workplace coordinator or Academic coordinator.
Q: I feel sick on the day of work placement. What do I do?
A: If you are sick, you are required to phone your supervisor immediately and let your supervisor that you are not coming in. In addition, you are required to email Student Support and your Trainer of your absence. You will also be required to email a copy of your medical certificate to Student Support for our records. Please note that you are still required to make up the hours you miss.
Q: My bus/train was late. Is that ok?
A: No, it is very important that you are punctual to your work place. Remember, every day is like a job interview and you need to make a good impression. Plan your trip to take into account possible delays and make every effort to arrive earlier to avoid being deemed late.
Q: What if I fail (Not Yet Competent) my work place Assessments?
A: Should a student not demonstrate competency within a single work placement, students may be required to undergo additional work placement hours and an additional assessor visit. An additional assessor visit will incur a fee of $200.
Q: Can I still work or work more than 20 HOURS per week during my work placement?
A: Yes, Students can work additional hours to their standard student visa allowance for the purpose of the Work Placement.
Q: Do I need to attend classes during my work placement?
A: There are no classes scheduled during the Work Placement. But you must continue your online learning throughout this period.

Entry Requirements
There are no pre-requisite requirements for this course. However individuals should:
- be 18 years old or over
- have completed year 11 or equivalent
- International Students are required to have an English ability at the IELTS level 6.0 or equivalent
